Mar 1, 2012: Native Voices at Autry Offers Two Plays in Repertory with Robert Owens-Greygrass at Autry National Center Wells Fargo Theater Tue, 21 Feb 2012 07:58:20 -0700, 06:58 AM |
NATIVE VOICES AT THE AUTRY PRESENTS TWO ONE-MAN PLAYS IN REPERTORY WRITTEN BY AND STARRING ACCLAIMED ACTOR AND STORYTELLER ROBERT OWENS-GREYGRASS (LAKOTA*) WALKING ON TURTLE ISLAND Rich with contemporary and historical elements, it portrays Indigenous experience through the stories and culture of Turtle Island. and GHOSTLANDS OF AN URBAN NDN Provides a gritty and humorous look at the conflicting worlds of a mixed-race heritage. March 3"18, 2012 (Previews begin March 1) Wells Fargo Theater at the Autry National Center, Los Angeles Native Voices at the Autry, the country's only Equity theatre company dedicated exclusively to presenting and developing the work of Native American playwrights, presents two riveting full-length, one-man plays, WALKING ON TURTLE ISLAND and GHOSTLANDS OF AN URBAN NDN, written by and starring acclaimed actor and storyteller ROBERT OWENS-GREYGRASS (Lakota*) in repertory from March 3 to 18, 2012 (previews begin March 1), at the Autry National Center's Wells Fargo Theater in Los Angeles. In the two vastly different works, which showcase his wit and humor, Greygrass portrays an astonishing 38 characters. Kevin Sifuentes (Hopi*) directs both productions. Randy Reinholz (Choctaw*) is Native Voices' Producing Artistic Director, and Jean Bruce Scott is Producing Executive Director. Rich with contemporary and historical elements, Walking on Turtle Island conveys the often untold Indigenous experience through some of the powerful and unique stories of Turtle Island (North America). It is a tour-de-force vehicle for Greygrass, who depicts 22 dynamic characters-from a grandfather, to a mixed-blood sun dancer, to a boy who has lost his dog, to an 80-year-old Ojibway woman, to Iyeska, a trickster and spirit guide who moves through centuries and inhabits various spiritual "skins." Greygrass previously starred in productions of Walking on Turtle Island at the prestigious Border Crossings' Origins: Festival of First Nations and the international Festival at the Edge in the United Kingdom. Ghostlands of an Urban NDN follows "Robert," a multiethnic-non-specific-lower-middle-class-urban-NDN (slang for "Indian") as he navigates the conflicting worlds of a mixed-race heritage. Greygrass plays 16 characters in this gritty look at the sometimes humorous, always gripping urban Native journey through the "ghostlands"-on and off the streets of contemporary "America." Native Voices at the Autry, a constituent of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), is made possible in part by grants and support from the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Arts Commission; the National Endowment for the Arts; Edison International; Nissan; the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians; Wells Fargo; and the Judith Jacobs Foundation. NATIVE VOICES AT THE AUTRY is the country's only Equity theatre company dedicated exclusively to producing new works by Native American playwrights. The company has been hailed by critics as "a virtual Who's Who of American Indian theatre artists," "a hotbed for contemporary Native theatre," "deeply compelling," and "a powerful and eloquent voice." Native Voices, which provides a supportive, collaborative setting for Native theatre artists from across North America, was established as a resident company at the Autry National Center in 1999. It is widely respected in both the Native American and theatre communities for its breakthrough plays and diverse programming, which highlight unique points of view within the more than 500 Native American nations in North America. Deeply committed to both developing new works by beginning, emerging, and established Native playwrights from across North America and seeing them fully realized, Native Voices has presented fully staged productions of 19 critically acclaimed new plays, including 14 world premieres; 8 playwrights retreats; 18 new play festivals; and more than 150 workshops and public staged readings of new plays. Native Voices is led by Founder/Producing Artistic Director Randy Reinholz (Choctaw) and Founder/Producing Executive Director Jean Bruce Scott. The theatre maintains successful long-term relationships with New York's Public Theater, Native American Public Telecommunications (NAPT), Washington's Kennedy Center, the National Museum of the American Indian, Montana Rep, and La Jolla Playhouse. Tickets are $20 for general adult admission, $10 for students/military/seniors (55+), and $12 for Autry members; groups of 10 or more save 40%. Previews are half-price and free for Autry members. Mar 4, 2012: La Phil's Sounds About Town Series Presents James Conlon Conducting Los Angeles Children's Chorus at Walt Disney Concert Hall Wed, 22 Feb 2012 08:05:47 -0700, 07:05 AM |
LA PHIL'S SOUNDS ABOUT TOWN SERIES PRESENTS JAMES CONLON CONDUCTING LOS ANGELES CHILDREN'S CHORUS AND AMERICAN YOUTH SYMPHONY IN WORLD PREMIERE BY ICELANDIC COMPOSER DANÍEL BJARNASON AS PART OF SHAKESPEARE-THEMED PROGRAM Sunday, March 4, 2012, 7:30 PM at Walt Disney Concert Hall Other Featured Works Include Willcocks' The Glories of Shakespeare and Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet The LA Phil's prestigious Sounds About Town series continues with a Shakespeare-themed program featuring renowned conductor James Conlon conducting two of the country's leading youth ensembles " the Los Angeles Children's Chorus (LACC) and the American Youth Symphony (AYS) " in the world premiere of The isle is full of noises" by Icelandic composer Daníel Bjarnason based on Shakespeare's The Tempest and co-commissioned by LACC and AYS on Sunday, March 4, 2012, 7:30 pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The ensembles also perform Sir David Willcocks' The Glories of Shakespeare, which draws on texts from The Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, Cymbeline and Two Gentlemen of Verona and alternates between spirited syncopated rhythms and slower, richly harmonic elements. Additionally, the chorus and orchestra each perform separately with LACC Artistic Director Anne Tomlinson conducting a compilation of inventive settings of Shakespearean texts for treble voices, including Benjamin Britten's Francie and Douglas Beam's Spirits, and AYS Music Director Alexander Treger conducting a suite from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, described by National Public Radio as "one of the most beautiful scores of the 20th century." A pre-concert talk with Bjarnason hosted by Chad Smith, Director of Artistic Planning for the LA Phi, is open to ticket holders at 6:30 pm. "We are honored to be a part of the esteemed Sounds About Town series and are extremely grateful to Mr. Conlon for conducting this highly anticipated premiere, which is reflective of his deep commitment to mentoring young artists," says Tomlinson. Adds Treger, "In what promises to be a diverse and illuminating program, we particularly look forward to presenting a new piece by Daníel Bjarnason, who is considered to be one of the world's most intriguing composers writing for artists ranging from the London Sinfonietta to the post-rock group Sigur Rós." Mirroring the plot of Shakespeare's The Tempest, Bjarnason's The isle is full of noises" begins with Miranda's compassionate plea to Prospero, her father " with whom she is stranded on an island along with Caliban, a monster who has taught them how to survive there " to have mercy on the souls sailing by the island on dangerously stormy seas. The choral writing divides the singers into 12 different parts with clustered harmonic chords serving to heighten her concern and despair. It then condenses in scope, drawing into three parts as she speaks of how she would have "sunk the seas within the earth." The second movement finds a lyric melody artfully representing Caliban's calming words over a pulsating major seventh chord that reflects the unusual sounds on the island upon which they are marooned. The composer employs glissandi (vocal slides) and humming to highlight the evocative island sounds. The movement ends gently as Caliban reflects upon his dream of gaining riches and his hope "to dream again." The concluding movement highlights the dramatic words of Prospero's "all shall dissolve" soliloquy by beginning with gentle harmonies that crescendo into the upper treble range, finally folding into one another to close in a single vocal octave. Bjarnason has garnered widespread acclaim for his debut album, Processions (2010), with Time Out NY declaring that Bjarnason "create(s) a sound that comes eerily close to defining classical music's undefinable brave new world." Both a conductor and composer, he has worked with a range of ensembles, including the London Sinfonietta, Ulster Orchestra and Sinfonietta Cracovia. He also regularly conducts at both the Icelandic Opera and Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Bjarnason has won numerous awards and grants and has twice been awarded a special recommendation for his work at the International Rostrum for Composers. In 2010, he was nominated for the prestigious Nordic Council's Music Prize and won the Kraumur Music Award. The same year, Processions won the coveted Best Composer/Best Composition category at the Icelandic Music Awards. Bjarnason's versatility as an arranger and conductor has led to collaborations with a broad array of musicians outside the classical field, including, in addition to Sigur Rós, Efterklang, múm and Ólöf Arnalds, among others. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under the vibrant leadership of Music Director Gustavo Dudamel, presents an inspiring array of music from all genres " orchestral, chamber and Baroque music, organ and celebrity recitals, new music, jazz, world music and pop " at two of L.A.'s iconic venues, Walt Disney Concert Hall (www.laphil.com) and the Hollywood Bowl (www.hollywoodbowl.com). The LA Phil's season at Walt Disney Concert Hall extends from October through May, and throughout the summer at the Hollywood Bowl. In demand around the globe with the world's leading musical organizations, Conlon has been hailed as "a miracle of equilibrium: his dramatic intuition never fails, nor betrays the transparency of the music" (La Monde de la Musique). Praised as "nimble of voice, body and spirit" (New York Times), Christy, who has sung at the Metropolitan Opera, Santa Fe Opera, LA Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago, among other notable opera companies, has provided her stellar artistry to LACC both as a founding chorister and, more recently as a highly acclaimed professional opera star, though numerous benefit performances and workshops with LACC. Corporate partner Nestlé USA has provided invaluable, leadership support to LACC's newest program, First Experiences in Singing, which introduces six- and seven-year olds from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds to the wonders and excitement of singing and music. Generous funding from Nestlé USA has enabled LACC to sink deeper roots into the local San Gabriel Valley community by presenting its "First Experiences in Singing" program at Nestlé-adopted Daniel Webster Elementary School in Pasadena, where LACC will also offer satellite auditions for the school's young students at the end of the spring semester. In addition to Blodgett, gala committee members include Annie Yeager Higgins (Pasadena), Jill Westbrook Roberts (San Marino), Ann Sunshine (Pasadena), and Andrea Greene Willard (San Marino).
